What is Mindfulness-based Therapy?
Mindfulness-based therapy is a type of psychological therapy which blends features of cognitive behavioral therapy with mindfulness techniques of Buddhism. This approach involves accepting thoughts and feelings without judgement rather than trying to push them out of consciousness, with a goal of correcting cognitive distortions. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy was founded by Zindel Segal, Mark Williams and John Teasdale, who based their therapy approach on a program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, called mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), which was adapted for use with major depressive disorders. Their aim was not for relaxation or happiness in themselves, but rather, a freedom from the tendency to get drawn into automatic reactions to thoughts, feelings, and events. Mindfulness-based programs usually consist of eight weekly two-hour classes with weekly assignments to be done outside of session. The aim of the program is to enhance mindful awareness so clients are able to gain empathy with the full-range of their life experiences instead of simply reacting to them to find immediate relief.
Turning toward a problem (paying attention to its presence), rather than turning away (denying its presence) helps to develop a relationship with the problem, which increases a feeling of effectiveness and the possibility that a problem can change.
